Four margin stamp, close at left, tied by two strikes of red square grid cancel. Matching PAID and New-York 5 cts cds. The folded letter is addressed to Boston. March 15th / ’47 docketing on back panel.
The folded letter has two vertical file creases, one affecting the stamp as shown.

Letter written by J Lewis Taylor to Hammond Whitney. Mr. Whitney is listed at 92 State Street in Boston (1848 city directory) and living in Cambridge. Jeremiah Lewis Taylor is listed at 160 Front Street in NYC (1848 Doggett’s) and living in Brooklyn. In the 1850 Brooklyn city directory he is listed as a general insurance agent.
Asa Hammond Whitney (1819-1858) married Laura Leffingwell Henshaw in 1842 and went into business as a junior partner in the house of Henshaw & Whitney, wholesale druggists, in Boston. He resided in Cambridge, but subsequently removed to Norfolk, VA, where he managed the financial affairs of the Seaboard & Roanoke R.R.
