Lot 617 New York N.Y., 5c Black, “ACM” Initials (9X1). Horizontal pair (Positions 34-35 noted in pencil), large top margin with trace of adjoining stamp, other sides ample to just in at bottom, uncancelled but just tied by top stroke of “1/-” shilling British due marking, on 1846 folded letter from New York to Trieste, care of Jas. Lang, London, England, two different letters written on same sheet dated Oct. and Nov., sender’s directive “p. Britannia” at lower left and carried on that Cunarder from Boston on Nov. 16, arriving Liverpool Dec. 1, London receiving backstamp of Dec. 2, perhaps a faint hint of a corner crease at top right of pair visible only under cross-lighting, small piece of backflap torn, Fine, rare use of New York Postmaster’s Provisional on cover to Trieste, especially rare with a pair, tiny Bolaffi handstamp at bottom, with 1978 P.F. certificate
