Notes
Lot 5 St. Louis Mo., 10c Black on Gray Lilac (11X5). Positions 2/4, vertical pair, full to large margins all around, tied by red "St. Louis Mo. Mar. 20" circular datestamp on small piece, top stamp has a few natural wrinkles at lower left
EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN MULTIPLES OF THE 10-CENT SECOND PRINTING ON GRAY LILAC PAPER. ONLY A FEW EXIST CANCELLED SOLELY BY THE RED DATESTAMP.
By the time of the Second Printing on Gray Lilac paper, St. Louis almost always used a pen cancellation. Therefore, without a pen cancel, the 10c No. 11X5 is even rarer than its counterpart on Greenish paper, No. 11X2. This pair is one of the three or four finest multiples cancelled only by the town datestamp.
Ex Hind and Caspary. Scott Retail $5,750.00 as a pair with usual pen cancellation
