Lot 24 1845-46 and 1846 Issues, 5c, Original or First Alteration Plate, Type III 4 copies.
Stamps: Top left and bottom right on greenish paper, top right and bottom left on gray lilac paper. The top right stamp has exceptionally large margins, the other cut into on one side. Each stamp is cancelled with single or double line pen cancellation. St. Louis JUL 8, 1846 postmark at right.
Cover: Small and attractive appearance.
Note: The fact that all four stamps are type III (the only type existing on the First Alteration Plate) is strong evidence that the stamps on greenish paper are from this plate, as are necessarily the stamps on gray lilac paper, before the 5c was retouched.
