They Are Genuinely Used On Cover With THE LEFT 20¢ STAMP HAVING SLIGHT WRINKLING AT BOTTOM
Lot 647 20c black on greenish (11X3), position 1 (right) and 3 (left), originally a vertical pair, used with 10c black on gray lilac (11X5), large margins except one 20c touched at bottom and 10c touched at top, distinctive shades of paper, tied by neat manuscript cancel, red St. Louis May 21 datestamp and matching Paid on large blue 1846 folded letter to the Charnley & Whelen firm in Philadelphia, neat file fold, the 20c stamp at left was slightly wrinkled at bottom when affixed, a fresh and well preserved folded letter.
Only one other cover with the 20c on greenish paper has been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. It is a single franking with frameline cut into slightly.
Extremely fine. This cover, which was the highlight of the 1948 Charnley & Whelen sale, is widely recognized as the most important St. Louis ˜Bears' Provisional cover extant and one of the most outstanding Postmasters' Provisionals.
