Lot 49 St. Louis, Mo., 1845, 10¢ black on greenish (11X2), type III, position 6, large margins and lovely fresh color, cancelled by pen and manuscript initials of Postmaster John M. Wimer ("J.M.W.") with flourish, well tied by red "St. Louis Mo. Feb. 10" c.d.s. on 1846 folded letter to M.T. Scott of Lexington, Ky., printed letterhead "Exchange and Banking House of William Nisbet & Co." in 2 lines with part-printed dateline, red "Paid" handstamp and manuscript "10"; stamp with tiny crease in left margin, still Very Fine, very rare. It has been speculated that the initials may have been a form of precancel or that Wimer was copying New York Postmaster Moriss' idea.

Matthew Thompson Scott Sr. (1786-1858) was a banker in Lexington, Ky and became President of the Northern Bank of Kentucky. He was a pallbearer in the funeral of Henry Clay. (History of Kentucky)
