Lot 637 5c Gray black (10X1), huge margins all around, manuscript checkmark, neatily tied by clear strike of red Providence May 29 datestamp, matching Paid and 5 handstamps on 1847 folded cover with large portion of letter contents to New York, light file folds, very faint soiled spots.
Very few covers are known with the Providence stamp tied by the handstamped markings. This example comes from the Newbold and Craft correspondence and is described in the Slate book (p 68). It was sold about 1898 by Charles MeKeel to Ferrary. At the Ferrary sale of Alril, 1922, the Providence brought $747 from Colson. It was included in the Duckwall and Caspary collection and, at the auction of the Caspary collection on November 15, 1955, it realized $1700, by far the highest price for any single Providence stamp on cover. It became part of the Arthur F. Hetherington collection and realized &18,700 at the 1983 auction of his estate.
Extremely fine. One of the finest of all providence five cent covers and a great rarity tied in this manner. Ex. Ferrary, Duckwall, Caspary, Hetherington. No. 45 in the Slater census. With PF certificate Cat. $12,500 Est. $12,000-15,000
