Notes
The Clapp correspondence was found in an old chest by a Swedish antique furniture dealer in Boston. Some of the covers were eventually sold to D. F. Kelleher who sold them to A. B. Slater. Additional covers from this correspondence were later found in the dealer's home before entering the philatelic market.
Slater, A. B., The Stamps of the Providence R. I. Postmaster 1846-1847, Haley & Sykes, Providence RI, 1930
Schuyler J Rumsey sale 106 lot 110 unsold (image) where the cover is dated DEC 25.
Schuyler J Rumsey sale 108 lot 1318 realized 800 where the cover is dated DEC 25.
Slater census number 21
The date looks more like 23 than 25. I am inclined to date this as 23 because, unlike the other two DEC 25, 1846 covers, the DEC is not inverted.
Also, on the 10/23 cover from Providence, the 3 has an upper horizontal bar (like the New York City 3). The FEB 23, 1847 cover has a rounded 3 on top so this is not definitive.
