Lot 15 5c Gray Black, 10c Gray Black (10X1, 10X2). Tied on individual 1846 blue folded letters addressed to Ripley & Talcott, Hartford Conn., the 10c with margins just in and tied by manuscript check mark, red "Providence R.I. Oct. 17" circular datestamp, the 5c with margins all around, canceled by manuscript check mark and tied by filing crease, red "Providence R.I. Oct. 21" circular datestamp, both letters rated with red "Paid" and "5" handstamps, indicating that the 10c adhesive overpaid the rate
A FINE AND REMARKABLE PAIR OF PROVIDENCE PROVISIONAL COVERS, SHOWING THE ONLY GENUINE USE OF THE 10-CENT STAMP ON COVER
The plate of Providence provisionals comprised eleven 5c and one 10c denomination. The similarity of the designs might have caused to sender's error in overpaying the 5c rate with a 10c stamp. To date, it is the only confirmed genuine use of the 10c on cover.
