Dr. Alexander Catlin Twinning (July 5, 1801- Nov 22, 1884), scientist, inventor, educator, civil engineer, and astronomer was born in New Haven, Conn. He graduated from Yale in 1820, was a tutor at Yale until 1825 and then moved to West Point, NY and studied Civil Engineering. He remained in New Haven until 1839 and then moved to Middlebury, Vermont and became a professor of mathematics, civil engineering, and astronomy at Middlebury College. Among his inventions was a machine for the manufacture of artificial ice in commercial quantities. He married Harriet Amelia Kinsley in 1829 and together they had 7 children.
