Lot 114 #9X1 5c black position 22, large margins except partially touching at left, intense color, cancelled by two blue pen strokes on an envelope to Blakely Pennsylvania, red New York postmark and arced PAID, fine and very scarce; the use of an envelope rather than folded letter sheets was quite unusual during the period of use of these stamps, only 10 or 12 examples of their use with the New York Postmaster's stamp are recorded. Until the introduction of the new postal schedule on July 1, 1845, and envelope counted as a sheet and increased the postage charged by one rate, old habits are slow to change, and envelopes are not commonly found used with United States stamps until the 1851 issue.
