Lot 72 5c black, pos 39, a superb large margined copy with part sheet margin at bottom, tied by red diamond grid to small neat cover to Philadelphia; bearing on front PAID, date New York pmk and on back oval Forwarded by Goodhue & Co. / New York, all in red. A very rare cover (9X1)

Notations on the back include 1. Ex Caspary #39 (position on plate) & 72 at top (lot #) and 2. J A Fox 5/4/57 lot 56 realized 260.50. he 56 in circle may refer to Siegel sale 200 lot 56 and the text at the bottom may refer to a Wolffer’s sale.
Date appears to be Jan 31. The letters JAN are cut off at the top due to poor inking. Above them the 1 is clear as is the lower loop of the 3. The 3 is faint at the top. While the lower loop gives the appearance of a 2, the numeral is too short compared to the 1. There is no evidence of doubling of the CDS so the 1 is of standard length. Red square grid cancel indicates late usage (1847 or later).
Letter addressed to St. George D. Campbell in Philadelphia. The 1847 edition of McElroy’s lists a St. George T. Campbell, attorney & counselor at 94 S 4th Street. The addressee is Saint George Tucker Campbell (1814-1874).
