Four margin horizontal pair, positions 22 and 23, both stamps tied by red Boston postmark "Boston Jan 31 Mass: ' This cover has a straight line red PAID (Boston marking) at upper right and a manuscript marking that is probably meant to be "10." In the lower left is a black manuscript "U. S. Mail Paid" on two lines. The cover is addressed to "Messrs. Howland and Aspinwall, New York." This item has Philatelic Foundation Certificate 42,433 and is both ex Emerson and ex Caspary where as Lot 99 it sold for $410. This cover was Lot 31 in the Siegel sale of November 19, 1964, where it realized $900. In 1976 it sold privately for $3,000.

Mail From Boston Addressed to New York City
Authorities agree that the New York Provisional was used to New York from eight cities. Covers from Boston are the most common, with 17 being recorded, three of which have pairs. the cover offered here, with the Position 22-23 pair, is of particular interest as the straight PAID (applied in Boston) indicates that the Boston Post Office accepted the stamps in prepayment. The single (Position36, on a cover from the same Howland and Aspinwall correspondence) is unique in that it received no postmark until it reached New York where the customary curved PAID was applied.
Lot 165 9X1a, 5c black AC M initials, positions 22-23, clear to large margins on three sides, close but clear at right, small inconsequential tear at right, neatly tied by a red Boston Mass pmk. on a Howland and Aspinwall correspondence folded cover to New York, matching red PAID and magenta ms 10 rate, very fine and rare usage; seventeen new York Provisionals are recorded used from Boston, three of which are franked with pairs, this being the finest (the other two others have their address panels removed and replaced in facsimile); 1973 PF certificate; ex. Boker, Caspary, Emerson, Grunin, and Wall. Est. $4,000-5,000
