Hamilton Canada
At one time there were three covers reported with 5c New York used from Hamilton, Canada. Two of these (Figs 105 & 106) were accidentally destroyed by someone smoking a cigarette in the 1940's. (See pages 208-9, Ashbrook Special Service). The remaining cover is shown in Figure 107. The stamps, positions 1 and 8, are uncancelled on a folded letter to Messrs, A. Bell & Son, 117 Fulton St, New York. The cover has a straight line PAID, manuscript 4 ½ and Hamilton AU 4 1847 CS cancel. It is backstamped Queenston Aug 6, 1847. The cover is ex-Caspary and realized $39,600 in the Christie's Weill stock sale.

Ashbrook Special Services cover 104
Photograph 104, is a photograph of a photograph of e similar cover that that was in the Roford lot which were accidentally burned. This, shows a vertical pair of the 5c New York used from Hamilton, C.W, on Nov. l? 1847, and exchanged through Lewiston on Nov. 20. The Lewiston P.O. crossed out the Hamilton PAID but failed to rate the letter as unpaid and with 10c due at
New York City. This is an especially interesting cover because 1t has a vertical pair, and verticals arc much more elusive than horizontals and also because here we have a use of the 5c New York, some five months after our 1847 stamps were issued. 1 judge that this pair was canceled at New York with pen strokes in the familiar blue ink.
