9X2 1847 5¢ black on blue wove TWO SINGLES, RED GRID CANCELS, ON 1847 DATED FOLDED LETTER TO BUFFALO NY, RED "PAID" AT TOP WITH TWO DIFFERENT NEW YORK PMKS.
AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A GENUINE USAGE, EXCH STAMP WITH A SMALL FAULT CAUSED BY STRONGLY IMPRESSED GRID CANCELS
New York, N.Y., 1845, 5¢ black on blue (9X2), two singles, both with large even margins, prooflike impressions on deeply blued paper, tied by red square grids (each stamp affected slightly from heavy impression causing small hole in right) on 1847 folded letter to Buffalo N.Y., vivid red "New-York '5cts' Aug 10" c.d.s. postmark also ties right stamp, additional strike adjacent of "New-York Aug 10" c.d.s. without the '5' ratemarking, matching "Paid" in arc handstamp, an Extremely Fine usage.

These stamps exhibit the "true blue" paper variety that was actually used after the introduction of the first United States postage stamps. Singles used on cover are extremely rare, but two singles is remarkable.
