Lot 142 #9X1 5c black position 16, a stunning single with large even margins on three sides and the fourth margin at left being a huge sheet margin, cancelled by a red square grid and just tied by a red New York / 5 cts postmark with the 5 cts in a straight line rather than following the circle's edge and with a 12 mm bar above, bold arced PAID to the left of the stamp on a neat March 22, 1847 folded letter to Washington D.C., extremely fine and a beautiful usage; this rarely applied postmark was introduced in March of 1847 and is known used on fewer than ten New York Provisionals; ex-Emerson, Grunin, Newbury and Wall
