Richard C. Frajola Net sale #4 (Middendorf) lot 221 Net $2500 dates this cover as OCT 22, 18xx.
Robert A. Siegel sale 1232 lot 1670 realized 750 dates the cover as Oct 25 and notes a 2000 PF certificate that calls the stamp's 2nd print a kiss impression and states the stamp did not originate. The catalog description notes the cancel's impression on the stamp also appears embossed in the paper, effectively tying the stamp. (cover and cds images)
The 2000 PF Certificate noted is not found on the PF website.
The CDS has some significant doubling, with a lighter image shifted upwards, as easily seen in the time stamp.
The date stamp is more interesting. Above the doubled 2 is the clear image of a bottom half of a 1, indicating that the date was printed from a roller rather that individual typeset. The second digit in no way resembles a 5. It might be a 2, as suggested by Richard Frajola, but the impression aligned with the leading 1 does not resemble a 1 (if the date were 22 and both numbers were not locked in place), nor a 4 (if the date were 25 and again not locked in place), but may be a 6. In fact, it is not hard to believe the date may be OCT 27.
Stephen B. Hutchings is listed as an agent at 36 John Street and residing at 84 Rivington (1845 Doggett’s)
Stephen Brown Hutchings was born January 18, 1795, on Division Street in the Bowery, New York City. He resided in Manhattan for most of his life. He died in Bloomfield, New Jersey, on June 12, 1885 at the age of 90.
He first began his artistic career around the age of 17. The 1812 New York City directory lists Steph. B. Hutchings as a portrait painter, living at Walker, corner of Church, in Manhattan. He is listed as a portrait painter up until 1843, when the New York City directory lists him as an (real estate) "agent."
In 1841, at the age of 46, he was appointed as a Commissioner of Deeds in New York City.
