Dated to 1843 by Calvet Hahn, The Beginnings of Adhesive Postage in the US Part 6 (The Penny Post Vol 9, No. 1 Jan 2001 p48) based on the Type 1 double ring CDS
The image here is from the Philatelic Foundation. The writing is so faint that the sharpness and darkness had to be enhanced to read it, which would have totally obscured the stamp. so I created a composite image to show both.
Charles J. and William Turrell, both Wall Street brokers, lived at 40 8th Street (1843 Doggett’s). They moved to W 16th Street and 5th Ave in 1845. They are listed in the 1851 NY Mercantile Directory as the Turrell Brothers under both Merchandise brokers and Metal Brokers. Lucy was the daughter of one of them.
