Careful examination of the CDS reveals the letter was, indeed, canceled on Apr 3, 1843.
The Reverend Thomas Macfarlan was an intimate of the Stuyvesant and Fish families, and was a close friend of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant. Reverend Macfarlan was also the chaplain for the Colored Home on 65th Street near 2nd Avenue in New York City, and an elder of the Seventh Street Methodist Episcopal Church. Another reference mentioned he was a financial agent for Peter Gerard Stuyvesant and Hamilton Fish. He is listed as an agent in 1843 Doggett's.
