Letter addressed to John F. E. Prudhomme, engraver at 31 Reade Street (1845 Doggett’s)
John Francis Eugene Prud’homme (1800-1892), born on St. Thomas, came to NY City in 1807, started learning engraving in 1814, apprenticed to his brother-in-law, Thomas Gimbrede. Best known for small plates and portraits including “The Velvet Hat” and “Friar Puck”. In 1852 he started working on bank notes, and from 1869 to 1885 he worked for the Treasury in Washington DC.
Prud’homme was made an Academician of the National Academy of Design in 1846 and in 1834-53 he was curator of the Academy.
He is also known for engraving “Trumbull’s painting” and “The Signing of the Declaration of Independence”.
