Rev. Henry Edwards (1821-1899) was from New Haven, Conn. He attended Flushing Institute in Queens, NY and then Yale College, graduating in 1841. After teaching for a few years, he studied theology, in 1845-47, first in New Haven and then at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church in NYC. After serving at churches in NYC and Conn., he eventually settled in Maryland, with rectorships at Sharpsburg and Hagerstown.
“Among other interesting incidents," he wrote in March, 1863, "was a visit from the whole of Longstreet's division, and on one Sunday I had the pleasure of preaching to a congregation composed of Southern officers and soldiers and at the same time praying for the President of the United States." This was the Sunday before the battle of Antietam.
When he took charge of St. Paul's church at Sharpsburg, the old church was in ruins, having been riddled by the cannon shot at the battle of Antietam, but, through his earnest labors, it was replaced by one of the prettiest churches in this region. Rev. Edwards conducted a select school in Hagerstown during his rectorship at Sharpsburg.
From 1867 to 1891 he was chaplain of St. James' College, and in 1881 he was Grand Army Chaplain. In June, 1891, he resigned the rectorship of St Mark's church, Lappan's, and St. Luke's, Pleasant Valley. Since he has been living a retired life in this city. He married Miss Charlotte Maria Crane, of New York, eldest daughter of Col. Ichabod Crane, First Artillery, U. S. Army, October 20, 1850.
