PF 605724 ... ON 1843 FOLDED LETTER... IT IS A GENUINE USE, THE STAMP WITH A CORNER CREASE AT TOP LEFT AND A VERTICAL MARGIN CREASE AT LEFT.
Letter written in care of L(ewis) B(artholomew) Woodruff (1809-1875), a lawyer in NYC, a federal judge of the 2nd Circuit under President Grant, and the recipient of several of the Brattleboro PMP covers. George was not his son but may have been a relative.
The 1845 edition of Doggett’s NYC directory lists the Woodruff residence as 212 W 19th Street, as written in ms. at the bottom. The docket may have been written by the letter carrier.
