John W. Francis was a physician at 1 Bont Street (1845 Doggett's).
Letter addressed to John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861). He was professionally associated with Dr. Hossack and they co-edited the American Medical and Philosophical Register, which they co-founded in 1820. Dr. Francis also held the chair of Obstetrics and Forensic Medicine at Rutger’s Medical College, a school that he helped found along with Dr. Hossack and others.
He was a prolific writer of medical articles. In 1846, he helped establish the New York Academy of Medicine and, in 1847, became its second President, (from the Eulogy on Dr. John W. Francis by Augustus K. Gardner)
