CDS overwritten by second strike. Date is Nov 13, with second digit overwritten by Y in York. Horizontal bar at top is part of digit, as is rounded bottom. Number is a 3 based on a second diagonal line to the right of the right upper branch of the Y
Cephas Grier Childs (1793-1871) was one of the most prominent American printmakers of his day. He was an expert engraver and publisher, and he later went on to run an important early lithographic firm. Despite his energy, skill and popularity, Childs never made much money from prints, and so in 1834 he abandoned the business to become a newspaper publisher. The Views of Philadelphia was Child's most important early publication, containing twenty six prints, most engraved by Childs. The work was originally issued in six fascicles of four prints each, running from 1827 to 1830.
Childs transitioned into editing and publishing, and published "The Commercial List and Price Current" from offices at 221 Dock Street. He retired from the "Current" in 1852, and served as the president of the New Creek Coal Company.
