AND WE ARE OF THE OPINION THAT
IT IS A USED SPERATI COUNTERFEIT WHICH DID NOT ORIGINATE ON THIS COVER
Cover described in PF Opinions Vol 3 pp 20-22 in an article by William T. Crowe, who notes the following: (1) The PAID marking does not match the NYC version (P w/o serifs, A wrong shape), (2) the stamp is position 29 but there is a colorless flaw between the N and T of CENTS characteristic of Jean de Sperati counterfeits (Type B in MacGuffin’s 1936 publication and two articles in The Chronicle by Philip T. Wall (#103 Vol 31 No 3 pp 160-65 and #108 Vol 32 No 4 pp 227-28). The fake stamp and PAID markings were added to a stampless cover.
Letter addressed to Miss Mary Perry (later Mary Perry Ford), daughter of Lucy Benjamin Perry (widowed with 5 children in 1830s) lived in Williamstown, Mass. Dr. Henry Lyman Sabin (1801- 1884) was an MD and proved a “stop” on the Underground Railroad to assist fugitive slaves heading for Canada. His second wife, Abigail Benjamin (1808-1883), may have been related to Mary.
Mary married Joshua Edwards Ford (1825-1866), who graduated from Williams College in 1844 and then attended Union Theological Seminary in NYC (1844-47). He married Mary and they both became missionaries to Syria, leaving in 1847 and returning in 1865. This letter, and two other bearing genuine 9X1’s, were probably sent by Joshua Ford to Mary
