Letter addressed to the firm of Howe, Mather & Co. This was originally Pratt, Howe and Co, run by General James T. Pratt and Edmund Howe. Major Roland Mather joined the firm in 1831 and, five years later, bought out Pratt’s interest and the name was changed to Howe, Mather & Co. Later still it became Mather, Morgan & Company when Julius S. Morgan, the father of J. Pierpont Morgan, joined the partnership. Morgan eventually left the firm and the name reverted to Howe, Mather & co until Mather retired, in 1853, at the early age of forty-two.
