ON TRANSATLANTIC COVER TO G.B.; Spectacular 30 Apr. 1846 E from New York to Manchester "Per Steamer Caledonia" franked for the internal U.S. rate by a fine New York 5c Postmaster's Provisional (4 close to good margins; with "A.C.M." P.O. assistant's initials - two tiny nicks just into frame-line) unusually tied by a mainly very fine large red "NEW-YORK/5 PAID" c.d.s. with a very fine Liverpool transit "1/-" charge-mark alongside; there are overstruck backstamps of Liverpool (14 May), Birmingham (14 May; Missent!) & Manchester (15 May).
