Lot 39 1846 on gray lilac paper, 20c, First Alteration Plate, the two types in a vertical pair.
Stamps: The pair has good to excellent margins left and right, frame line is cut at bottom, and stamp cut into at top. fine impression. Tied with very light wavy pen cancellation. St. Louis JUN 5 1846 pmk at right.
Cover: Small and neat.
Pairs of the 20c are exceptionally rare, are uncatalogued and there are probably not more than two pairs on this paper existing. In such circumstances the condition must be largely forgotten, for a finer pair probably does not exist.
