Slater census number 205 to M. L. Brainard
This Brainard cover first appeared in New York, where it was rejected about 1923 by A. Krassa. Next appeared in an auction in Los Angeles, November 5, 1926. Sent to Slater for examination and found to be a fake and was promptly withdrawn. Cover is marked in red 18 ¾ which was single rate 150 to 400 miles before July, 1845. Other facts about no 5 and no PAID with type of postmark used in 1844-45 showed that the cover went through the mail without stamp at least 14 months before the Providence stamps were issued.
