Lot 41805 New York 1845 5c black on bluish, two singles tied on folded cover by blue ms & pmkd New York 10 cts & PAID in arc alongside, both in red, L stamp large margins and R just touched at TL, left stamp being pos 36 showing double frame at T, very fine & attractive (9X1)

Letter addressed to Mary (Gilbert) Colgate (1788-1855), wife of William Colgate (1783-1857), manufacturer of starch, soap and candles. The William Colgate & Co., located at 6 Dutch Street in NYC (1846 Doggett’s) also involved Charles Carroll Colgate (nephew, 1822-1880), Joseph Colgate, and Samuel Colgate (son; 1822-1897). The company later became the Colgate-Palmolive Corporation. William Colgate and his family supported Madison University in Hamilton, NY and, in 1890, changed its name to Colgate University.
William’s sister Charlotte (1781-1870) was married to William Boswell Selden (1772-1849) of Norfolk, Va. so this letter was written to Mrs. Colgate while she was visiting her sister-in-law.
