March 17 (1847) written by the edit or of the New York Sun to a lady in Bristol , Rhode Island, informing her that her husband had been saved from a shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico . This cover was still in the Meyer Collection when it was sold by Robert A. Siegel on June 25, 1969 (Siegel #355).

There is only one recorded example of a New York Provisional used on an advertising cover. This cover, (Fig 135), is and envelope with the imprint From the Office of the New-York Sun, southwest corner of Fulton and Nassau Sts¦ New York, 184 . In manuscript, inked in the space provided, is March 17th and 7 for 1847/ the 5c stamp, position 1, is tied by the red square New York grid and 2 strikes of New York 17 Mar 5 cts postmark. There is also a red PAID in arc. The cover is addressed to Mrs. F. M. Dimond, Bristol RI. The enclosed letter, (Fig 136), tells Mrs. Dimond that her husband was saved from the shipwreck of the Royal Mail Steamer Tweed which was lost in the Gulf of Mexico.
