United States: 1845-Prior to the issuance of the United States postage stamps, Postmaster Robert H. Morris of the New York City, issued a provisional stamp for the New York City post office. To prevent the danger of the misuse of the stamps, the Postmaster initialed the stamps 'R.H.M' prior to be being affixed to the envelope, thus validating the use of the stamp. Initialing of the stamps started early in July, 1846. The stamp was then canceled with pen strokes and a red circular die stamp indicating pre-payments. 'ACM' (Alonzo Castle Monson) initials appear on this stamp. The initialing of the stamps is even thought been done by a postal clerk.
