Lot 157 #9X1e, 5c black, without initials, position 1, ample to large margins, tied by black ms pen strokes on a July 31, 1845 folded letter to France, bold large red New York 5 Paid July 31 foreign mail pmk, orange Boulogne transit, red boxed Colonies &c Art 12 and ms 20 decimes due mark to be collected from the addressee for the ocean, British, and French postage, originally addressed to St. Etienne and readdressed to Paris, ms ˜rue du mail 4' at bottom with the addressee's Paris hotel address on back, very fine and very handsome; this is the earliest possible use of the large red New York pmk and is possibly the finest of the four recorded July 31, 1845 usages.
