Lot 570 5c black without signature (9x1d), margins all around, tied by red Paid arc handstamp, matching New York 5 cts. July 15, (1845) circular datestamp on folded letter to Little Falls, NY, datelined New York July 14, 1845, white bleached spots in lettersheet, filing crease thru stamp.
Philip Ward's published census of July 15, 1854 covers with New York Provisional stamp accounted for seven examples, all sent to overseas destinations. In addition to those covers, there are two July 15 covers to domestic addresses, including the example offered in this sale.
A fine and extremely rare example of this key date of use, which is the earliest recorded and generally considered to be the earliest existing. Est, $2000-3000.
