Lot 111 #9X1e, 5c black, without initials, position 19, large to huge margins including the top frameline of position 24 at bottom, tied by red PAID in arc, matching New York / 15 Jul / 5 cts. pmk on an 1845 folded letter to France, the earliest recorded use of the New York Provisional (yeardate confirmed by a red circle 1845 British transit on the reverse), bold Colonies / &c Art, 12 boxed handstamp in red with another arced PAID above, ms 15 decimes due mark, extremely fine; a fabulously rare cover, there are eight July 15, 1845 covers known used to overseas destinations and two known used domestically; this is unquestionably one of the finest known; a slightly lesser quality earliest recorded dated of use cover to Germany in the Weill Brothers sale realized $17,000, plus the 10% buyers premium in 1989; accompanied by a 1987 letter from Philip Wall attesting to the genuiness of this extraordinarily rare cover. Est. $20,000.
