Lot 800 5c Red on white entire, blue signature (8UX1 [now 8UX4]), with red New Haven April 1 1846 handstamp and matching Paid in scroll on entire addressed to Horace Clark Esq., Middletown, Connecticut, impression strengthened with iron sulfate blotting out most of the design, cover edge tears and wear, expertly silked on the inside.
Carroll Alton Means' The New Haven Provisional Envelope gives the background to the discovery of this entire. It was discovered by Richard C. Fagan, Middletown Ct. whose grandfather was the addressee. Fagan presented his find in Jan 1888 issue of the Philatelic Journal of America. C. H. Meekel purchased the entire at auction in St. Louis and was concerned with its weak impression. He investigated different possibilities t restore the color and decided on trying sulphate of iron which he thought would unite with the iron in the color and restore the same. He applied the solution with a camel's hair brush. No immediate change was seen, but as the days passed, the iron got a rusty appearance and showing the lines drawn with the brush instead of restoring the impression of the original color, leaving only the blue signature intact.
The only recorded red on white entire with a blue signature and as such, a great rarity. ex. Ferrary. Est. $7,500
