Lot 15 The Dutcher Copy

Asa Holman Waters, Millbury Postmaster 1836-1848
The Millbury 5¢ is one of two postmaster provisional stamps with a portrait of George Washington (the other was issued earlier in New York City). There are nineteen recorded examples of the distinctive Millbury provisional stamp, including one with original gum, seven cancelled off cover, three cancelled on pieces and eight used on covers. This cover is addressed to William E. Hoit, in care of the New York City merchant firm Loder & Co. at 83 Cedar Street. The stamp has four margins and is tied by the red Paid, and the cover is postmarked January 12 (1847). This cover is reported to have been discovered circa 1896 by the niece of the addressee among family papers in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was sold by the New England Stamp Co. to Frank J. Dutcher, a prominent collector in the 1890s who lived in Hopedale, Massachusetts. The cover was pictured on a greeting card printed by New England Stamp Co. during the 1906 holiday season. Sometime later, probably during the 1930s, it was acquired by Henry G. Lapham. Henry's son Raymond exhibited the U.S. Postmasters' Provisionals collection at the Third International Philatelic Exhibition (TIPEX) in 1936, where it received the Grand Award, the first ever awarded to a United States collection. In the years that followed, the Lapham collection was sold privately through Colson. The Dutcher-Lapham Millbury cover and other provisionals were acquired by the Frelinghuysens directly from Colson.
