Postmaster Provisional, 5c Black on bluish,A fresh attractive single with frame lines visible on all sides (complete at the bottom and right, nearly so at top), tied by the typical manuscript cancel on a folded business letter to Philadelphia, the cover is postmarked by a blurred strike of a blue Baltimore circular date stamp with a matching "PAID" alongside; a light file fold passes through the stamp but is almost invisible when viewed normally; a very fine example of this rare provisional on cover. Scott $10,000.00

Notation at bottom reads “Barnum Hotel Balt” indicating the sender was not from Baltimore but only visiting.
There are several McMurtries listed in the McElroy’s Philadelphia City Directory but none matching the initials B. E.
Haddock, Haseltine & Reed were merchants in Philadelphia, specializing in shoes, bonnets, and caps. The firm was run by Daniel Haddock, Jr., his uncle John Haseltine, and Charles D. Reed.
