Lot 1918 1847, 5c red brown (Scott 1), a splendid right margin single with robust color, four-margined with solid stretch of stamp below captured as well, tied by red grid and matching Syracuse / Oct / 19 / NY postmark to blue folded letter sheet addressed to McGraw Ville, NY, second strike of postmark at left, stamp and cover remarkably well preserved, the vertical file fold of no consequence. McGraw is a village in Cortland County, New York, United States (south of Batavia near the Pennsylvania border). The village is named after Samuel McGraw and is in the eastern part of the town of Cortlandville, east of the city of Cortland. Prior to 1869, when McGraw was incorporated, the town was known as McGrawville (today, another community to the west is called McGrawville). Samuel founded the town in 1805 and soon there were other farms and a saw mill, a grist mill, stores and a cemetery.
In the 19th century the community styled itself as "Corset City" for several decades of corset manufacturing. P.H. McGraw & Son produced corsets in the 1880s. Later, the business was renamed the McGraw Corset Company and then the Empire Corset Company.
The village was home to New-York Central College, McGrawville, an institution of higher learning founded by Free Baptists in 1849. The college was notable because it was the first college in the United States founded to accept all students, including both women and African Americans.
