A similarly stamped cover was sent from Boston to New York City addressed to Samuel W. Bridgham (1813-1870) on March 14, 1849 or 1850.
However, there are two Samuel Willard Bridghams (and two wives) that may be associated with this letter.
The first is Samuel Willard Bridgham (1774-1840), who was a lawyer, Rhode Island Attorney General (1814-1817), spent 19 terms in the Rhode Island general assembly, two of which as Speaker of the House, and was the first Mayor of Providence (1832-1840). This Samuel Bridgham was married to Elizabeth Paine (1776-1853) and had 6 children, one of which was Samuel Willard Bridgham.
The son, Samuel W. Bridgham (1813-1870), was a broker on Wall Street in New York City and was associated with the firms of Jacob Little & Co and Rawdon, Bridgham, and Groesbeck. He was married to Eliza Ann Fales (1813-1895) in Boston in 1839.
Another child of Samuel (the father) and Elizabeth Paine was Elizabeth Williuams Bridgham (1799-1882), who was married to William Samuel Patten Sr. (1800-1873). He was editor of the Rhode Island American (1825-26), an attorney, and Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives 1847-48.
So the letter was either addressed to William Patten’s mother-in-law Elizabeth (Paine) Bridgham or to his brother-in law’s wife, Eliza Ann (Fales) Bridgham.
