While no longer a cover, this was from the Catharine McKie / Francis Thayer correspondence. The full list of covers was obtained from John Mudge, owner of the original letters, many of which were published in The Family Letters. From his listings, this piece may have come from the Aug 28, 1849 letter to Catharine which was docketed #111. (Francis usually mailed his letters the day after he wrote them so why an Aug 28th cover wasn’t mailed until Aug 31 is a mystery but no other cover is closer to an Aug 31 mailing date.) This cannot be verified since the accompanying letter was not published in The Family Letters.
Note the first stamped letter in the correspondence was mailed 11/20/48 and Catharine and Francis were married in April 1850 so an Aug 31 stamped letter must have be mailed in 1849.
