Montreal receiving mark reads SP23 1850
[The inked address partially blocks the 3 but the upper left of the number clearly shows a short serif of a 3 and not the vertical connection of a 5; and the upper right shows the diagonal connection from the top to the lower loop of a 3. Finally, the tail of the number clearly curves upwards toward the left and extends further left than the top (not true with the 5 in 1850).]
Letter addressed to Harry W. Welch, agent of the Canadian Life Assurance Co. He is listed as the Quebec agent in the 1851 edition of Lovell’s Canada Business Directory.
