Despite the auction lot description, this cover holds many puzzles. The portion of the cds that is readable looks like Md., as in, perhaps, Baltimore instead of Philadelphia. The last name of the addressee is either Sloughton or Slaughter, neither of which is in the census. The “L. C. Hills” is also confusing as it appears in neither the Philadelphia nor Baltimore city directories. Finally, the cut off words below the addressee may be Patent Agent but the addressee is not listed under the Patent Dept. in the 1850 Congressional Record.
