Lot 2990 1847, 5¢ orange brown (Scott 1b), tied to folded letter with red circular grids cancel with blue Baltimore, Md. postmark, addressed to Beverly, Va.; cover has heavy vertical file folds, stamp is slightly faded and has three ample to large margins, slightly cutting in at bottom, a Fine to Very Fine cover.

Col David Goff (1804-1878) was a prominent lawyer and Justice of the Peace in Beverly Va. In 1853 he was elected the first Superintendent of Schools of Randolph County. A colonel in the Virginia militia, he was an active supporter of the Confederacy, and was instrumental in organizing the Confederate build-up in Beverly during the earliest days of the war. His home, used as a Federal hospital during the Civil War, has been historically preserved in Beverly (now in West Virginia).
