The Maine Democrat was commenced in Saco, Jan. 6, 1828, by Messrs. Wm. and John Condon, who continued to publish it for several years, and then sold it to T. Maxwell and Michael Beck, Esq. of Portsmouth. Mr. Beck in a short time purchased Maxwell's interest in the paper and continued its publication until the time of his death, in 1843. It was then purchased by Alpheus A. Hanscom, who continued as its editor and publisher until May, 1864. (History of the Press of Maine, p126)
