John Gadsby (1766-1844), a tavern owner in Alexandria, started building his hotel in 1827 at the corner of 6th and Pennsylvania in Washington DC. His son, William (1808-1866), sold the hotel in 1844 to the Williards who renamed it the National Hotel. William built another hotel at the corner of 3rd and Pennsylvania, Also named Gadsby’s Hotel, it continued operations for almost 90 years.
