Scott #1, brown, on June 5, 1851 folded letter from Boston Mass to New York City addressed to Rev. M B Anderson, editor of the New York Recorder. Stamp tied by black circular grid cancel. Cover also has a red PAID marking and a red Boston June 5 5 cts cds.

The 'Baptist Advocate' was commenced in 1839, by the late William H. Wyckoff, LL. D., who remained its editor till 1845 when it changed ownership and name, being called the 'New York Recorder.' In 1850 Dr. Martin Brewer Anderson (1815-1890) became its owner and editor, and remained so till 1853. The paper merged with others and, eventually, in 1865, became The Examiner, which was a Baptist weekly newspaper with, perhaps, the largest circulation in the world. Dr. Anderson moved to Rochester NY and became the first President of the University of Rochester (1853-1888)
