Freeman Keyes (1805-1871) and his brother, Henry Keyes (1810-1870), owned a store in Newbury Vt. from 1831 to 1854 when they dissolved the partnership; the firm being called F & H Keyes. Freeman retained the store and Henry, who was director and later president of the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers R. R., bought a farm in Haverhill. A younger brother, Horace T. Keyes, joined the firm in 1850 and remained until 1872. Thomas C. Keyes, Freeman’s son, also joined the firm in 1864 and took over management in 1872 after Freeman died.
Henry later became president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe R. R. in 1869 after a successful political career (Town representative in 1855; state senator in 1847-48; candidate for Governor, 1856, '57 and '58. Delegate to several successive National Conventions of the Democratic party, and chairman of the Vermont delegation at the Baltimore convention which nominated Stephen A. Douglass for President in 1860.)
