Martin Russell Thayer and John Clayton were attorneys in Philadelphia. They are both listed in the 1848 McElroys Philadelphia city directory but are not listed in the 1849 edition. The John Clayton family papers contain his letters for 1833-1848 only even though he died in 1881. This letter is an 1848 usage.
