Lot 699 (2) 10¢ Washington placed on an 1851 folded letter. Stamp has red grid cancel, 3 full margins, very close at top and in at UR with a ccr. We are not convinced that the stamp is tied, therefore offered “as is

Advertisement on the front page of the Nashville Union, Feb 18, 1853 reads ”Fine Shot Guns. The undersigned are this day opening a fine and well selected stock of Shot Guns, of every description, comprising single and Double Barrel Bird Guns, Heavy Deer Guns, &c. These guns are all made to our special order, and we have no hesitation in recommending them to our customers and others wishing to purchase. (oct 27) – Fall & Cunningham” (Library of Congress). Cancels do not extend beyond stamp margins onto envelope at left or right. Date appears to be Mar 26, 1851 but 6 is centered under the A, as if it was Mar 6 and the ‘2’ is not real. There is some evidence of a double strike, particularly in the outer ring below the stamp.
